Confirmed: Media Blasters rescues Record of Lodoss War

Anime News Network has confirmed my previous story, that Media Blasters has indeed license rescued both the OVA and TV series of Record of Lodoss War. Media Blasters has not yet announced when they will be releasing the titles on DVD.

  1. I thought this one would be lost forever. Adored the OVA series, and still think it's the best ever fantasy anime created. Not so keen on the TV series. Once that glorious Yoko Kanno opening theme and beautiful opening animation are over, there isn't much there to keep you interested. Well the SD stuff was fun. That Image set for the OVA was a bit of a dog. Glad I got the CPM version.

  2. Yeah sadly I own the Image set :(. It is a dog :(, well put. The CPM set is beautiful in comparision. But I'll be re-buying Media Blasters set now so all is well. I don't own the TV series, but I'll pick it up from Media Blasters anyway, even if it isn't too good.

  3. Awesome. Think they'll pick up other CPM classics like Utena (only got one disc) and Birdy the Mighty (or Funimation most likely would since they got the new show)?

  4. Hmm I can't really say. But I sure hope so! I know that there's some weird licensing reasons as to why no one has picked up Utena yet, but I hear some are/have tried. You should read what Justin Sevakis has to say about that title on ANN forums. He can't say a lot but he hints at a few things. IMO it's probably the same thing that held CPM up the first time, from being able to release the entire thing on DVD. They had to renegotiate the contract after they released 2 volumes (IIRC) which took a long time. Took them years to get it all on DVD. Then again Enoki Films has the main license of Utena (CPM sub-licensed that title), so might be a problem with them (although I doubt it). Luckily I have the entire TV series on DVD (although it cost me quite a lot of money). I hope someone will rescue it, but who can say with these problems they're having. If your interested in buying the OOP dvds the best route to go is buying all the singles. That's the cheapest way anyway. But it still will hurt your wallet.

As for "Birdy the Mighty", if anyone gets it, neo-ADV might pick that up, but I wouldn't gamble on it if I was you. You can still find copies on amazon. I think if Funi wanted it they might have grabbed it with their new show by now, but hey maybe they are planning on saving it if the new show sells well or something? Still I wouldn't gamble on that title, best to buy it now IMO.

    Thanks for reading and commenting!
